ӣ����Ƶ Professor Highlighted for Park Designed for Coastal Resiliency

Jeffrey E. Huber, professor in the School of Architecture within the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at ӣ����Ƶ, was recently featured in magazine for a park he designed with Lawrence Scarpa, his partner at Brooks and Scarpa Architects, that addresses coastal resiliency. DC Alexander Park in Fort Lauderdale allows for passive and active recreation, while addressing resistance to weather shocks like flooding and heat, and encouraging habitat restoration for indigenous species.

The design of the park builds on Huber’s research regarding strategies to address sea-level rise, saltwater intrusion, habitat loss and rising temperatures, which are outlined in his 2024 book “Salty Urbanism.” The book draws on Huber’s extensive experience in architecture and urban design to offer a comprehensive framework for integrating adaptive strategies into the urban fabric. The manual explores innovative design solutions that not only mitigate the impacts of rising sea levels but also enhance community resilience and sustainability.

Huber’s research, teaching and design work have garnered numerous national awards from The American Institute of Architects (AIA), The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), and the American Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) from whom he was awarded the 2011-12 ACSA/AIAS New Faculty Teaching Award and more recently the Tau Sigma Delta Gold Medal (2024) – the only architect ever to do so from Florida. Huber was elevated to Fellow of The American Institute of Architects in 2021, received the National Young Architect Award in 2017, and he has received more than 15 national AIA Institute design awards and more than 75 national design awards.
